Waterproof drainage systems explained

Food and drink factories generate large quantities of waste and it’s estimated that processing just one kilo of meat generates approximately 1.2 litres of waste water. Therefore, effective management of this waste water in food production is critical to hygiene, productivity and employee safety. An expertly designed drainage system ensures optimal hygiene standards and also minimises the risks of disruption to production caused by drain blockages, floods and leaks.

It’s important to take a universal approach to the specification when designing your watertight drainage by considering the below key steps:

Correct placement, design and capacity

Quite often not enough consideration is given to required capacity and flow rates for the current and future demands of the factory. Insufficient drainage capacity can lead to flooding which compromises overall health and safety and more importantly increases the risk of cross-contamination. The high and low risk underground drainage systems must be separate but if this is not possible the correct anti back flow gullies can solve this problem. Also, careful consideration needs to be given to the production equipment to ensure drainage is easily accessible. Quite simply, any equipment placed on top of the drainage will be difficult to access, making it harder to maintain and clean. The planning of production equipment should work hand in hand with the drainage system, both need to be considered right at the very start of a project.

Reliable floor-drain connection

The drainage needs to be compatible with the flooring to ensure a seamless connection. If you specify the wrong floor or drainage then you’re more likely to see cracks occur in the flooring surrounding the drainage, possible elevation of floor plates or even flooring separation.

Correctly sloped floors

The floors should be angled to ensure waste water runs from the wall to floor and into the drainage. If the floors slope at the incorrect angle there is an increased risk of water pooling in the factory causing both hygiene and slip hazards. Waterproof wall protection

The wall protection extends the hygienic performance of food production facilities. The superior water resistance can be achieved by redesigning the way the wall connects to the floor. The most efficient way to create a robust waterproof drainage system is to lift the border between the wall and floor and to create fully hygienic, rounded corners. The wall protection range is also suitable for providing all round protection against high volumes of pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

Hygienic performance criteria of leisure centres

All pool and shower areas require special attention to detail when it comes to drainage design performance. Unfortunately, the high-level of foot traffic in leisure centres increases the risk of slippages and falls in wet room areas. Therefore, drainage requires higher-flow capacity rates, long term durability as well as minimal maintenance for easy cleaning.

All solutions for leisure centre centres should be specially fabricated to eliminate any risks to bare feet or snagging of any toes. Therefore, shower areas should feature drainage holes or slots small enough to avoid any injuries. Lightweight drainage is ideally suited to these settings as it enables the drain cover to be easily removed as part of the daily cleaning regime. The positive slope function in the design of the drain channel allows the system to be fully drained and eliminates any stagnant waste water to build up. Slip resistant gratings are also available to maximise health and safety concerns in higher-risk areas. This ensures each component of the drainage system is easily removed and cleaned with no need for sharp edges to optimise user safety.

All products should be manufactured in high quality grade 306 or 316 stainless steel to protect against corrosion from chlorine and other harsh chemicals. Also, stainless steel features advantageous properties applicable for leisure settings including:

  • Non-porous means its easily cleaned and disinfected
  • Resistance to higher temperatures
  • Corrosion resistant
  • Aesthetic appeal

The intense cutting, forming and welding of stainless steel will introduce any impurities into the surface of the material. When pickle passivation is applied as surface treatment it means the corrosion resistance of the stainless steel is fully restored to its original state to ensure long term performance and durability.

Hygiene solutions for UK distribution centre

The largest automated warehouse for online groceries in the world and renowned for its high-level distribution required robust drainage systems for their new facility. The 563,000 sq ft warehouse facilitates direct deliveries to home in the region as well and supporting a network of existing distribution centres, handling approximately 200,000 orders per week.

Aspen worked closely with the architect to design, manufacture and install stainless steel solutions to support the hygienic performance of the entire environment. Aspen provided engineering drawings, samples and prototypes to ensure a seamless manufacturing process and delivery of the project from day one.

The Aspen Stainless Davo Plus 100 Drain Channels were fitted to support the cleaning regime and water flow within the factory. The channels suited the environment due to its easy to clean surface and self-draining fall slope for draining waste liquid. This blended perfectly with the flooring design supplied by John Lord Flooring and allowed for waste to drain effectively into the surrounding channels and gullies. The Delta Gullies and Summit Gully Round, Bottom Outlets were fitted to collect sink and condense waste and specifically bead blasted for a smooth, corrosion resistant finish. The system worked hand in hand with the hygiene needs identified in the warehouse and in compliance with hygiene best practice outlined by the EHEDG (European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group) The Hygienic Design Principles states “surfaces must be easy to clean, non-absorbant and not present toxicological hazard of substances into foodstuffs. All surfaces must be resistant to the product and to all detergents and disinfectants under the full range of operating conditions” All of our channels were manufactured in grade 316 stainless steel due to its smooth, protective and solid chromium oxide layer on top. The metal contains no pores, cracks or open spaces for bacteria, including taste and odour to embed itself in, as it is a self-contained piece of material. Stainless steel metal products are, without question, the most hygienic option for food environments.

The kerbing was specifically fitted and mounted onto the wall of the warehouse to offer maximum protection. This drastically improved the cleaning efficiency of the facility by eliminating any small debris that can harbour and grow in the small cracks. Aspen stainless steel kerbing, wall cladding and corner protection was perfectly compatible to the high volume of pedestrian and vehicular traffic within the facility.

The dedicated project manager worked closely with the contactor during the installation process to ensure highest standards for drainage and protection were achieved. Aspen works closely with the client to ensure installation meets the necessary building regulations and specification works hand in hand with guidelines outlined in the EHEDG.
